mood board of the month
Want to know the secret to making your home look professionally decorated?
This month’s Edesign (mood board) is all about mixing neutrals (sources below).
I’ve said it many times before. The key to making your home look professionally decorated is mixing and layering. Pay more attention to the undertones than the actual colors when coordinating different fabrics and materials.
“Wait, but doesn’t everything have to match?” Absolutely not! You miss out on so many opportunities in the design process by sticking to this “rule”. When everything matches perfectly there is virtually no depth, interest, or variety in the room. It completely lacks personality.
mix & match neutrals
If you were to layer the fabrics from all the pillows, sofa, and chair in this design on top of each other- I can almost guarantee that none of the neutrals would be a perfect match. Yet, they work so well together in the grand scheme of things.
Our Edesign of the month has a mix of beige, ivory, cream, white, off-white, tan, gray, etc. Which is exactly why it’s so inviting, warm, and chic! I mean, how gorgeous is that cognac leather ottoman on top of that charcoal rug?
Don’t get too hung up on needing everything to match, you can drive yourself crazy hunting down the perfect fabric! From a distance, your eye can’t make the distinction that the ivory in one pillow is slightly different from the white in another.
The trick to making a room look sophisticated and polished is diversity- in colors, tones, textures, and layers. So, go ahead and throw that notion that “everything has to match” out the window and you’ll see how much easier it is to put together that magazine worthy room you’ve always dreamed of.
